The Derrick Golf and Winter Club is Edmonton’s most complete family-oriented private club. Members of all ages and abilities enjoy golf, tennis, swimming, racquet sports, and a wide range of athletic and social activities year-round, all within a friendly, safe, and first-class environment.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Aquatics Manager, the Lifeguard is part of the recreation department. This position is responsible for providing a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment where all members can enjoy the aquatic center.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Surveillance: Maintaining constant surveillance of assigned areas to ensure the safety of patrons. This involves scanning the water and surrounding areas for any signs of distress or potential hazards.
  • Prevention: Taking proactive measures to prevent accidents and injuries. This includes enforcing safety rules, educating patrons about water safety, and ensuring that all safety equipment is in good working order.
  • Rescue: Responding quickly and effectively to emergencies in the water or on land. Lifeguards must be trained in rescue techniques such as reaching, throwing, and towing, and be prepared to perform CPR and first aid as needed.
  • Emergency Response: Coordinating with other lifeguards, emergency services, and medical personnel to provide timely and appropriate assistance during emergencies.
  • Customer Service: Providing excellent customer service by assisting patrons, answering questions, and addressing concerns in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Maintenance: Performing routine maintenance tasks such as cleaning and inspecting the pool, equipment, and facilities to ensure they are safe and in good condition.
  • Record Keeping: Keeping accurate records of incidents, rescues, and other important information to help improve safety protocols and response procedures.
  • Communication: Effectively communicating with patrons, colleagues, and supervisors to ensure a safe and efficient operation.
  • Planning and Preparation: Designing lesson plans appropriate for the age and skill level of students, including objectives and goals for each session.
  • Teaching Swimming Skills: Instructing students in basic and advanced swimming techniques, using effective and engaging methods.
  • Ensuring Safety: Constantly monitoring all students during lessons to ensure their safety in and around the water.
  • Evaluating Progress: Assessing the progress of students, providing them with constructive feedback, and adjusting lesson plans to meet individual learning needs and abilities.
  • Promoting Water Safety: Educating students on important aspects of water safety, drowning prevention, and safe behavior in and around water environments.
  • Communication: Effectively communicating with students, parents, and guardians.
  • Administration: Recording attendance, tracking progress, and administer and create report cards upon session completion.
  • Attend in-service meetings.

Education and Experience

  • Swim For Life Instructor / Life Saving Instructor is considered an asset
  • First Aid required
  • National Lifeguard (NL) required
  • SwimAbilities Instructor is considered an asset
  • Intervention Record Check (IRC) required
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills
